One of the best ways to fall in love with the Basque Country is to walk it.
Whether you’re a weekend wanderer, a seasoned hiker, or simply looking to stretch your legs after too many pintxos, there is a beautiful trail for you. Donostia-San Sebastián offers an incredible variety of trails that begin right from the city, or just a short bus ride away.
Here’s a curated list of top hikes I plan to explore as soon as I arrive, plus helpful links and resources to guide your own adventure. I can not get enough of these trails, and I can’t wait to take you all with me when I get to explore each!
Without further ado, and in order of how I will be exploring them, here are the top trails in Donostia-San Sebastian, in Basque Country.
🌊 1. Paseo del Monte Urgull (Mount Urgull Walk)

Distance: ~3 km round trip

Distance: Varies (up to 7–8 km depending on route)

🌿 3. Camino de Santiago (Northern Route Segment)

🧭 5. Santiagomedi and the Giant Heads Trail (in Usurbil) A.K.A The Cider Trail

Trail Vibe: That’s right, we saved the best for last. A leisurely trail with Cider? Sign me up! Reviewers call this route whimsical and unexpected. The “giant heads” make it a fun, artistic detour from traditional hikes, and the nearby sagardotegi (cider houses) are worth a post-hike visit.
🧺 Tips for Hiking in the Basque Country:
